Custom TimberTech Deck Built Above a Garage in St. Paul

This one was a fun build. The homeowners had an underused space above their garage and wanted to turn it into something they could actually enjoy - not just a forgotten flat roof. So we got to work designing and building a custom TimberTech composite deck that now serves as their go-to outdoor hangout spot.

TimberTech was the right call here for a few reasons. Above a garage, you're dealing with a surface that needs to handle the elements without any extra help from you. No staining every couple of years. No sealing. No warping or splintering to worry about. TimberTech composite decking holds up through Minnesota winters and comes out looking just as good on the other side.

The layout came together really well. We built in a stepped section that creates two distinct zones on the deck - a lower step-down area tucked near the privacy screens, and a wider open area perfect for seating. The privacy screens themselves are a nice touch. Built with matching composite slats in black aluminum frames, they add a sense of enclosure without making the space feel boxed in.

The black aluminum railing wraps the perimeter and ties everything together. Clean. Modern. Zero maintenance. It's the kind of detail that makes a deck feel finished rather than just functional. And with a space this size sitting above the garage, you want every element to feel intentional - because it's all out in the open.
