Here's what we were working with - a weathered, graying wood deck with boards pulling apart, rotting steps, and framing that had clearly seen better days. No railing to speak of, worn-out treads, and the kind of structural concerns that make you nervous every time someone steps outside. It was past the point of a simple repair.
So we went full refresh. New TimberTech decking, new framing underneath, a new landing, new steps, and a completely new railing system with wood posts and black metal balusters. We also touched up the siding where the old deck had left things looking rough around the edges. When you're doing work this close to the house, those details matter.
TimberTech was the right call here. It holds up to Minnesota winters without the annual staining and sealing routine that wood demands. No splinters, no warping, and the color stays consistent year after year. For a backyard that gets real use - grilling, dining, hanging out - that kind of low maintenance makes a big difference.
What stands out most on this one is how much the whole backyard changed. The new steps and landing give the space a clean, finished entry point. The railing ties everything together and adds safety without closing the space in. It went from a deck you were tolerating to one you actually want to spend time on.
If your deck is starting to look like the before photos here, it's worth getting eyes on it sooner rather than later. Structural issues don't get better over time - and a full remodel like this one can completely change how you use your outdoor space.
